For those that want to get ahead of the game in English, some reading ideas and work are attached. Those pupils going into year 10 should have no problem finding their attachment as it is pretty straightforward, however pupils going into year 11 will need to know which poetry selection his/her teacher does, so see below…….

9/11 – Henry is a poet

Henry Macpherson blew me away with this reponse to Simon Armitage’s ‘Out of the Blue’.

The giants of New York.

Sun rising high on a Tuesday morn,

floating across the sea of blue sky.

Glistening of the giants of the cities sky line.

The hustle and bustle of commuters,

busily rushing to work blissfully unaware of what lies

minutes before them.

Planes rising high on a Tuesday morn,

floating across the sea of blue sky.

Shooting towards the giants of the city’s sky line.

Then out of the blue:

the impact, the horror, the despair

the giants;

ripped from life.

Help comes; help runs

but is it too late.

then the impact of another plane!

The rest is a blur, too hard to see

as I stand there waiting, waiting to see,

will he escape;

will he reach me.

This is a moment

we won’t forget

and we must remember the people

we lost.

Hymn To The Night

A dark cloak is thrown with fear and anger

The fearful sun sinks to the depths

The gleaming warriors start to appear

A sword is swung from the sheath of night

The light is cut with a dark edge

The shadow of evil engulfs the land

People falling from the sky,

People dying day and night,

Many suffer,

Many die,

Many people cry and cry.

News travels at the speed of light,

Shocking many in its path,

Breaking hearts,

Killing hopes,

Brace yourself for disgraceful jokes.
